DMT: The Spirit Molecule

DMT Movie

Released in 2010, PG-13, 74 min. Available on Netflix.

DMT: The Spirit Molecule is the title of a book and a documentary, both released in 2010, which investigate the effects and potential beneficial use of dimethyltryptamine (DMT). This molecule, manufactured by the human brain, is found in nearly every living organism. It is considered by some to be the most potent psychedelic on Earth.

DMT may interact with the pineal gland, which is believed by some to be the gateway to the spirit world. The pineal gland is considered by Hindus to be the site of the seventh chakra, and French philosopher René Descartes described it as “ the seat of the soul”.

N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT or N,N-DMT) is classified as a psychedelic compound of the tryptamine family (more on Wikipedia). It is a structural analog of serotonin and melatonin, and a functional analog of other psychedelic tryptamines.

Aya-cooking

Ayahuasca cooking.

DMT has traditionally been consumed for divinatory and healing purposes by indigenous Amazonian Amerindian cultures, through the consumption of a plant called ayahuasca (read more in this other post: Ayahuasca, vine of the soul – Can a plant give us access to spiritual realms?)

The companion book to the movie, written by Dr. Rick Strassman, is subtitled A Doctor’s Revolutionary Research into the Biology of Near-Death and Mystical Experiences. From 1990 to 1995, Dr. Strassman conducted U.S. Government-approved and funded clinical research at the University of New Mexico, in which he injected sixty volunteers with DMT.

From Amazon’s Description:

“His detailed account of those sessions is an extraordinarily riveting inquiry into the nature of the human mind and the therapeutic potential of psychedelics.

In Strassman’s volunteers, it consistently produced near-death and mystical experiences. Many reported convincing encounters with intelligent nonhuman presences, aliens, angels, and spirits. Nearly all felt that the sessions were among the most profound experiences of their lives.

DMT: The Spirit Molecule makes the bold case that DMT, naturally released by the pineal gland, facilitates the soul’s movement in and out of the body and is an integral part of the birth and death experiences, as well as the highest states of meditation and even sexual transcendence. Strassman also believes that “alien abduction experiences” are brought on by accidental releases of DMT. If used wisely, DMT could trigger a period of remarkable progress in the scientific exploration of the most mystical regions of the human mind and soul.”

pigna-cone

According to David Wilcock, this giant cone pine (cast in the 1st or 2nd century by Publius Cincius Salvius, who left his name on the base) towering in a Vatican courtyard is a representation of the pineal gland. Wilcock believes the Vatican has been suppressing knowledge about the pineal gland.

Legal Status of DMT
While it has been know since the early 1970s that DMT is endogenous, i.e. naturally produced by the human body, as well as many other living organisms, this compound has been illegal in the United States since 1966, along with other hallucinogenic or psychedelic substances such as LSD and mescaline. In 1970, DMT was classified as a “Schedule I” drug under the U.S. Controlled Substances Act. This means it is illegal to manufacture, buy, possess, or distribute (sell, trade or give) DMT without a DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) license. It should also be noted that “any material… which contains any quantity” of a schedule I drug is itself a schedule I drug under the law. Furthermore, since DMT has also been classified as a Schedule I drug under the UN 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances, most countries have fallen in line and made it illegal. These dispositions are rather psychedelic in themselves when you consider that DMT is naturally produced by the human brain… As David Icke mentions in his book The Perception Deception, “drugs that can kill you and put you spiritually to sleep are promoted and protected by the authorities, but psyche-opening drugs which, if used properly in safe conditions can show you the illusion, are banned.”
