Repeat after me: Free trade is goood…
The Council of Canadians has helped support Common Frontiers in making a “Free Trade 101” whiteboard animation video. Published on November 17, this video was designed to reach the majority of people in Canada who have not heard of free trade agreements like the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
The video is narrated from the perspective of big business supporters of free trade agreements – hence my title: Free trade is goood for “us“. It highlights that trade and investment agreements increase corporate power, erode state sovereignty, weaken democratic authority and are central to the neoliberal framework of privatization and deregulation.
Most importantly, the video points out why these trade agreements are negotiated in secret. It also notes the investor/state dispute settlement (ISDS) provision that affords foreign corporations the right to sue local governments for compensation when their laws & regulations are deemed to impede free trade.
The Council of Canadians has organized a petition asking Prime Minister Trudeau to reject the TPP – click here to read and sign this petition.
