Unsurprisingly, the new Canadian Liberal Government plans to go ahead with the Trans-Pacific Partnership, known as the TPP, which the precedent Conservative government of Stephen Harper had discreetly agreed to on October 5, at a ministerial meeting held in Atlanta, Georgia, just before being ousted by the Canadian electorate in the October 19 general election.
The federal government has confirmed that it intends to sign the controversial trade deal on February 4 at a meeting held in New Zealand. However, we might still be able to have the Canadian government scrap the deal since “only a majority vote in the House of Commons would ensure that Canada seals the deal,” according to International Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland.
The text of the TPP was released to the Canadian public on November 5, 2015. The new Liberal Government has since embarked on a consultative process in which Canadians are invited to participate, and it has set up a website to make its promotion, claiming to “being transparent, open and consultative with Canadians” on the TPP.
Like many others, I believe so-called “free trade deals” have been a sham since their inception back in the 1980’s, and the TPP may very well be the worst of them.
As the Green Party of Canada says on its website, the TPP is the wrong deal for Canada: “Trade deals should create jobs, not offshore them”, as has been the case with the precedent agreements, first the Canada – U.S. Free Trade Agreement (CUSFTA) which was shoved down our throats by another Conservative, “Lyin’ Brian” Mulroney, all the way back in 1989, and which was superseded by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994.
Plain and simple, the TPP puts our jobs, communities, and environment at risk. It will weaken our food safety regulations, damage our copyright laws, make our medicine more expensive, and erode our sovereignty.
There is still time to stop this rotten deal, and I have collected the following three petitions if you want to make your voice heard.
Will you take action before it is too late, or is your apathy going to get the better of you? Surprise me.
- Sign the petition today on the Green Party of Canada’s website and tell Prime Minister Trudeau not to ratify the TPP.
- Your can also sign a petition asking the Canadian Government to reject the TPP on The Council of Canadians’ website.
- And as of February 19, 2016, we can now petition the government directly on the Parliament of Canada’s website by signing a Parliamentary e-petition sponsored by Alistair MacGregor, NDP MP for Cowichan—Malahat—Langford in British Columbia. An e-petition only needs 500 signatures to be heard in Parliament, but the more of us sign, the more of an impact we make.
